Retina Exam Saves 53-Year-Old's Life

October 9, 2009 - Boca Raton, Fla. - Dr. Jed Beck of Pearle Vision at St. Andrews Plaza reported that a 53-year-old patient with 20/20 vision learned that there is no such thing as a "routine eye exam" when a retina exam revealed what later turned out to be a potentially fatal tumor.

Michael Lazzaro of Boca Raton recently underwent an Optomap® Retinal Exam at the Pearle Vision in Boca Raton and the results revealed a suspicious lesion. Lazzaro was referred to a retinal specialist and then to the world renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute where he was diagnosed with posterior uveal malignant melanoma. Had the tumor gone undetected, the results would have been fatal.

"I now appreciate and understand the necessity of regular eye exams," said Lazarro. "Thanks to the early detection by the Optomap and Dr. Beck's skill and experience, my potentially fatal cancer was detected at an early curable stage."

Lazarro's diagnosis and outcome strengthened Dr. Beck's belief in routine eye exams.

"I am extremely happy to know that our patients are benefiting from our investment in technology," said Dr. Jed Beck. "Most patients feel they should only be examined when they need a change in prescription. In reality, the most important part of the examination is determining the health of the retina. Early detection of any retinal abnormality may lead to earlier and safer treatments and prevent vision loss – and in this case, death."

The Optomap® Retinal Exam uses a scanning laser ophthalmoscope and non-invasively captures an instantaneous, ultra-widefield digital scan of the retina. Optomap scans give practitioners a tool to help discover retinal disease. This offers an assisted opportunity to diagnose eye conditions as well as other health conditions – early. Importantly, it enables the practitioner to effectively determine the next course of action.

Boca Raton Optometrist offers early risk assessment and prevention of Age-Related Macular Degeneration

September 8, 2008 - Boca Raton, Fla. -
A device that can quickly and easily assess a person's risk for developing Age-Related Macular Degeneration has only been available in research facilities… ¬ until now.

Jed Beck, O.D., is the first eye care professional in the Boca Raton area to offer ZeaVision's program, called QuantifEYE®, for early risk assessment and prevention of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in adults and is fast approaching epidemic proportion. 15 million people currently have it, and that number will double by 2010.

"We continuously strive to provide our patients the very best in eye care services. Until now, eye care professionals had absolutely nothing to offer patients in the way of early risk assessment of this life-altering disease," said Dr. Beck.

Once the symptoms of AMD are noticeable, damage has already occurred and its effects are both irreversible and permanent. The test for early risk assessment of macular degeneration is quick, easy and non-invasive, requires no dilation and provides immediate results. "We are proud to make this new technology available to our patients," said Dr. Beck.

Risk factors for developing AMD include a family history of macular degeneration, smoking, having light skin and/or light eyes, having had unprotected exposure to the sun, being overweight and having low levels of macular pigment. Macular pigment is important for protecting the eyes from damaging UVA and UVB rays.

Dr Beck can now measure pigment in the macula, offering a measure of potential risk for developing the disease. And, if low levels of macular pigment are detected, diet changes are recommended, along with a zeaxanthin- and lutein-based supplement called EyePromise®. EyePromise®, which is available at Dr. Beck's Pearle Vision, can positively impact the risk of developing macular degeneration.
